This CO₂ emissions calculation methodology is based on standard fuel consumption metrics used in marine operations. Users input the quantity of fuel consumed, either in metric tons (MT) or cubic meters (CBM). If CBM is selected, the user must also provide the fuel’s density (in MT/CBM) to convert the volume into mass.
Once the quantity in MT is known, it is multiplied by an emission factor specific to the fuel type. These emission factors—expressed in metric tons of CO₂ per metric ton of fuel—are derived from widely accepted international sources such as the IMO (International Maritime Organization). By applying this simple yet robust formula, the methodology enables consistent estimation of carbon dioxide emissions for various marine fuels, including VLSFO, HSFO, MGO, LNG, and biodiesel blends like B20 and B50.
